Cocor Canal Bridge

Ville de moissac
Moissac

Details of the activity

Built in 1845, its vocation is the transport of goods to Bordeaux. By its 356 meters long with 15 arches in Toulouse bricks and white stone from Quercy, it is emblematic (one of the three largest canal bridges in France); its construction is a mixture of materials symbolizing the confluence of our knowledge. Linking the Mediterranean to the Atlantic to improve trade in the south of France is an old project! The Canal Lateral de Garonne was dug as a continuation of the Canal du Midi built by Pierre-Paul Riquet in the 17th century. The first impoundment was made in 1845. The canal then linked Toulouse to Moissac, via Castelsarrasin. In Terres des Confluences it includes works of art: the Cacor canal bridge, and the St Jacques swing bridge. Freight transport was never prosperous, but tourism and the creation of the greenway bicycle in place of the towpath gave new life to the canal. It is now possible to have the Canal Latéral de Garonne as an address, and to live in a boat as in a house… and to stay all year round with your feet in the water!
