The Moulin de Moissac

It all starts in 1474

The 100 year war has just ended. The Viguier de Ricard brothers begin construction of the Moulin de Moissac on the ruins of an old wooden mill that has just burned down. These four millstones which turn thanks to the power of the waters, quickly make it the most important mill in the region. The Beaucaire family bought the Moulin and gave its name to the island opposite the Moulin. Today, the island of Beaucaire is a nature reserve classified "Natura 2000"

From the middle of the 17th century and until the 19th century, it grew (36 millstones), it became the largest mill in the Southwest. It produces flour reputed to be excellent thanks to the Bas-Quercy wheat which arrives on its quay by barge. In 1916, the world was in the midst of a world war, it was the battle of the Somme. The Mill burns on the night of September 26 to 27, it will not recover, it was left abandoned.

In 1932, the Roaring Twenties, Moissac became an uvale resort where planes landed on the Tarn, the Mill was transformed into a Luxury Hotel. In 1939 the Second World War broke out and the hotel closed its doors.

During the war the Mill was made available to Shatta and Bouli Simon, a young couple member of the Jewish scouts of France, 500 Jewish children and whole families were hidden and saved from Nazi barbarism. Thanks to the silence of the entire population of Moissac, no child has been deported. At the end of the war, Shatta and Bouli Simon made the Moulin a place of life and a technical high school so to speak it was a place of reconstruction.

In the 1970s, the Moulin again became a 3 * Hotel with a starred restaurant and a nightclub in place of our current spa. Personalities such as President Giscard d'Estaing and Catherine Deneuve have stayed there. In the 1990s, the Moulin de Moissac fell into disrepair.

In 2003, the Moulin de Moissac was renovated and in 2013 Mr. and Mrs. DASS-ARCOLE bought it and became a renowned hotel in the region, for the pleasure of our customers.
